Good news Uber Manila Riders!

Starting Oct 12, 2016, Uber rolled out a new fare estimation system for UberX riders, this is called Upfront Fares.

Uber will now display the “actual” fare you’ll pay even before requesting for your ride.

All you have to do is enter your pick-up and drop-off locations, and this new feature will show you the price for that trip. This way, riders are more certain of how much you will pay for your trip.

Instead of displaying the surge and a range of estimated fares, Uber now shows you the closest estimated fare upfront before requesting for your UberX ride. For example, instead of seeing that a fare will cost 1.5x, the rider would see that the trip will cost ₱150. This way, Uber riders have a more accurate information about their fare before requesting for a ride.

This feature is a great relief for riders. No more estimating, no more bill surprises after the trip.  Truly a more seamless riding experience!

How does Uber estimates the Upfront Fares?

Uber estimates the upfront fare by considering a variety of factors at the time of request that typically affect a fare (including pick-up location and destination, surge, traffic, and tolls). Uber uses past data to estimate the likely cost of the trip, and displays that price/ fare to a rider upfront before they request for a ride. This is only available for UberX rides.

If you have multiple stops or have to change your destination mid-trip, fares will simply fallback to the original time and distance rates. This means the upfront fare quoted to you at the beginning may not be the same fare charged to you after the ride.

NOTE:

This does not mean that there’s NO MORE SURGE pricing. This also DOES NOT mean that UberX will have fixed fares like UberPOOL. Please refer to the FAQs below for more info.

Frequently Asked Questions re Uber Manila Upfront Fares:

Q: Does Upfront Fares mean UberX is Fixed Fare like UberPOOL?

Upfront fares only gives you the closest estimate of your fare before requesting. The UberX fare is still based on time and distance.

UberX Rate per km: Php 5.7/km

UberX Rate per minute: Php 2/min

Uber estimates the upfront fare by considering a variety of factors that typically affect a fare, including surge, traffic, and tolls. Uber is able to use past data to estimate the likely cost of the trip, and can present that price to a rider before they request. With upfront prices you cannot book a car without approving the cost beforehand.

Q: How will the upfront fare be determined?

Uber estimate the upfront fare by considering a variety of factors that typically affect a fare, including surge, traffic, and tolls. Uber is able to use past data to estimate the likely cost of the trip, and can present that price to a rider before they request. With upfront prices you cannot book a car without approving the cost beforehand.

Q: What if a rider changes their destination, has multiple destinations or makes extra stops?

An upfront fare may not be honored if a rider makes significant changes to their trip route. In these cases, your fare will fallback to the original time and distance rates. Riders are notified that fares will change at a few points before and during the trip. All riders are shown this copy on the requesting screen (wait time copy only applies to cities that charge for wait time).

Q: Does this mean there’s NO MORE Surge Pricing?

There is still surge pricing. Instead of displaying the surge and a range of estimated fares, Uber now shows you the closest estimated fare upfront before requesting for an UberX ride.  This way, Uber riders have a more accurate information about their fare before requesting for a ride. The surge pricing (if any) time is already included in the upfront fare shown to you before requesting for a ride.

Q: Surge icons and surge screens no longer appear for up front fares – Why?

This new way of showing fare accounts for surge, but provides the rider with more precise information up front. For example, instead of seeing that a fare will cost 1.5x, the rider would see that the trip will cost ₱150. This is aimed at providing riders with more information immediately, so they can choose the product that best meets their needs and budget.

Q: Will surge pricing be included in the upfront fare?

Yes. If there are more people requesting rides than drivers available to give them, fares will increase via surge pricing. The price the rider is shown is guaranteed upfront — this will make it even easier for riders to compare the cost between a shared ride and a solo journey. With upfront fares you cannot book a car without approving the cost beforehand.

Q: Is the upfront fare completely inclusive (i.e. includes the booking fee, toll charges etc.)?

Generally yes. There are some instances when the final fare could be lower than the fare given upfront (for example, if the user has a promo code applied) — or higher, such as if the rider changes the destination of the trip or the time it took to get to the destination is significantly longer than the estimate.
